On first look, Wal-mart is a wonderful place to work. The processes are designed to keep work flow & inventory flow running smoothly. We stock shelves based on capacities, make display pretty, & work occasionally with customers in the night shift. In reality, management doesn't enforce the processes set in place, so it's a never-ending cycle of overstuffing shelves resulting in tricking automated re-order processes into re-ordering, setting up a snowball effect of automatic over-stock while management pushes us to get the stock any way we can onto the shelves to sell.

This resulted in mountains of "feature items", stressful workplace, & a whole lot of unnecessarily harder work. The hardest part of this job, besides physical, is knowing there's great automated processes in place, & that by working against it, it has created a monstrous & stressful cycle of putting out fires, & learning I'm not allowed to do a thing to bring things back in line.

Some management expressed same frustration. I did enjoy working with customers & some of my co-workers. It was nice seeing Wal-mart does give some people down of their luck, a chance at a new start. Don't know if CEO has any idea impact work-practices vs automated processes has on the lower efficiency of the whole business, or just won't see it to make appropriate changes.

I didn't know what department I would be working until 2nd interview.

I was placed in the deli with very little training and was written up for something I didn't even know was part of my job almost a year later.

I was told something completely different the first day i started.

They will fire people and leave your department short of help and when you go over your hours you get in trouble. A couple of the managers are very disrespectful to the associates unless the big boss comes in. One manager will tell you what they want done then 15 minutes later another manager will tell you something different. if they don't want to deal with an issue you may having they tell you see me later on that, and after about 3 weeks or sometimes longer, they finally answer or deal with the issue.

If they don't know how to answer a question or don't want to deal with it their favorite saying, ""it's the Wal-mart way"". They work you full time hours for so long and when asking about full time benefits you get a run around. They want you working full time hours but don't want you to reap the benefits.

It was a place for me to help get caught up on bills and financially be set, but to work long term there I would NOT want to do.

Worked as a cashier ringing up customers and occasionally got pulled for cart duty outside.

I learned how to handle people and communicate with people.

Management was shifty at best. always telling me that the schedule was made by the system but they would conveniently change it to fit their needs at the last minute. Have to argue with management constantly about hours and being kept over time. I was also kept at part time at 34 hours instead of just being full time. There was also the time I had a car crash and called in every day to call in and then go it and get confronted by managers for not alerting them and them threanting to fire me.

Showed them papers and pulled managers I talked with to get them to drop it. I also had an incident where I went on vacation and was told I need to do A,B AND C to take care of everything to get paid vacation. Come back and my check is not accounted for vacation time. Find out from the co manager that I needed to do A,B,C AND D. Even though I asked everyone at the original 3 parts if that was it and they all agreed. I was told sorry better luck next time until I told the manager ""I'm calling OSHA"". At that point they fixed the issue in 10 minutes.

The enjoyable part was the conversations I had with staff and customers and making things more enjoyable for everyone. I also really liked quitting.

On a daily basis as a Asset Protection Associate I was in charge of checking safety stations throughout the store. I would make sure that all high theft security devices were secured with spider wire. I would check all CCTV/PTZ cameras to make sure they were clean and working properly. I would stop and apprehend potential shoplifters.

On a daily basis as a Lawn and Garden Associate I would be in charge of stocking all merchandise that needed restocking. I would merchandise the department to help promote the sale of several items. I would operate a forklift to load and unload trucks full of merchandise. I would water plants and make sure they got the proper nutrition. I would shrink wrap pallets and bin them using a walking stacker. I provided customer service to guest that arrived at the store.

I learned to be a team player. I learned that integrity,responsibility and honesty are essential for success. Management for this company would only favor certain associates making it hard to promote within the company. I really had to work hard to get promoted where others did not. My co-workers were individuals i worked with on a daily basis. I only had a work relationship with them. Hardest part of the job was being a perfectionist. The most enjoyable part of the job was knowing that I was a big part of the stores success by being the best associate I could possibly be.

Wal-Mart is an interesting to work due to the variety of people that come through the store. It is productive because of the amount of product that we sell. Some days it is extremely busy other days it is not that busy.

There is an opportunity to grow with in the company sometimes it takes a little while but it is there. I like working there because you stay very busy all the time, between the customers and the work we do every day. I work third shift and it fits me better than mornings.

The managers are good to work for and they will work with you if you have a problem. They try to help as much as they can. My co-workers are great to work with too. The hardest part of the job is some of the lifting we have to do some of which is the reaching. The most enjoyable part of the job is meeting new people and seeing familiar faces that go through the check out lanes.

With Wal-Mart being about the busiest place in the town of Dickinson, that means there is many tasks to stay on top of to ensure that customers get the best shopping experience possible.

Some of the daily tasks are making sure the Sales Associates get their daily tasks done and correctly, keeping up with the daily Department Manager tasks like price changes, ordering, on-hand changes, feature management, scanning outs, also any other tasks that the Salaried Members of Management may add.

I have learned many things about retail when I worked at Wal-Mart, I didn't have any retail experience before I started there, I started out as a Sales Associate and worked my way up to a Department Manager with my hard work and dedication to the company.

The hardest part of the job for me was definitely the lack of communication and respect from the upper management, I could be told 5 different tasks by five different people and then get told I wasn't doing the right thing by someone else because the Management team has a very poor communication system.

I did like my duties and working with customers to make sure they could find exactly what they were looking for and get items for them from the back or also ordering products for costumers if we were out. I also really liked the Associates in my Department, we all got along really well and worked well as a team to get our work done.

Job work/life balance: nonexistent. they'll work you till 1 am then have you come in at 9 am as long as it's the bare minimum.

Compensation/benefits: nonexistent unless you've worked there for years and years. even after a year there I didn't have enough hours to take one whole shift as a personal or sick day. and they will work you just up to the point where they need to give you real benefits, without giving you the last hour needed. (so you're part time)

Job security/advancement: again, next to none. Wal-Mart hires and fires about 10 people a week, unless you have a friend in management to get into the higher ranks, they'll try to make you quit or look for a reason to fire you, because the less time you work there the easier they can replace you with someone they can pay less.

Management: an utter joke, they contradict each other and take it out on employees, half the time when the store is swamped they'll sit around at the CSM podium talking about what they're gonna get for lunch.

Job culture: well there is a Wal-Mart job culture, but it's not the kind of thing you want in your life.

This company has a very productive learning environment. They allow associates to cross train in most areas which makes them more valuable to the company. My job title was case-lot order-filler but I was allowed to train in shipping and receiving, label control, QA, Merge, break-pack, etc. I was trained to drive 5 different types of lifts for the different jobs I preformed. The people were always very nice and most completed their jobs in a timely manner.

If you ever had a job related question for the Management staff, they were always on the floor to help answer any questions you had. In most cases, they went out of their way to help you succeed.

The is always LP's on duty so it is definitely what I would consider a safe working environment.

The hardest part of the job was the heat, but you were allowed to dress in conservative shorts for the job, so it was manageable.

The most enjoyable part of the job was the work schedule. For most jobs, you could either work the four day schedule T-F or the weekend schedule of 3 days which included S-M.

Wal-Mart is a great company to work for and they have excellent benefits.

I worked almost 5 years for Wal-Mart. I never became full-time because they don't believe in giving full-time. I was hindered repeatedly by 90% Of the managerial staff, 75% of them didn't even know how to manage people. Wal-Mart hires managers from people who get B.A. degrees in Business. I have seen managers come and many more go. Unfortunely they recycle bad salaried managers to other stores for ""more training"". I haven't see this, we mostly see them get shuffled to another store.

I had a few really wonderful managers who told us we were appreciated and had value. This is very rare in Wal-Mart.

I worked for a store where I made a family with some of my co-workers. I really missed them and had to find a job that was full-time and had full benefits.

We saw young men being more valued, discrimination against older women, and young men who didn't do their jobs right and also had problems with disrespecting women not get written up or fired. Sometimes you felt like you worked in a war zone.

I'll be honest, right off the bat. While I agree that in my experience, the company is a terrible place to work, not all of the members of management are as I will be depicting them. I just had the unfortunate luck of getting into a store that was like this.

The store I'm in is rife with un-professionalism (management talking about associates, by name, to other members of management, promoting their friends over people who would get the job done better, etc).

We're a bit of a cluster____ at present and have been for the last two years I've worked here, and according to co-workers, it was better the first year we opened. (a year before I joined). We're up in profits and sales, and yet our quarterly bonuses mysteriously vanish. Hours are cut without explanation.

You don't have the staff you need in order to get the job done, requiring you to do the work of two people in your department, in addition to the work of 6 additional people from other shorthanded departments. Management will often speak in disrespectful or sarcastic tones as well.

Typical day at work requires standing for 10 hours, picking cases while being timed. No advancement, no cross training until you've been there over ten years and that's hand picked by management, they picked the same people for all cross training.

For instance, one guy will be cross trained in four areas, while 10 others guys will have none. Not efficient enough in that sense, when that one guy is on vacation or calls off.

Co-Workers are just trying to fit in, and maintain. Can be volatile at times,, long days create a bad environment. Everyone for themselves while Wal-Mart management preaches team efforts and awards their same select few with awards and act like the job is a breeze while making you watch the same videos over and over again on proper lifting for OSHA requirements.

The hardest part of the job is the wear and tear you receive over time. The groceries are put in place in oddball areas, 60 lb cases in 20 slots at head height and after several years your body starts to break down. 25 injuries a year occur. Over several years, Mostly all employees are injured, while a select few remain mum because of fear, 80 percent of employees ultimately turn in the claims and are hushed or fought to be taken to receive treatment. But ultimately Wal-Mart succumbs.

Pays well.

A typical night at the work place consisted of our normal 10pm meetings. Where we would discuss things that are necessary to keep the store clean and running smoothly. And about stocks and our truck loads.

Also what's expected of us. I learned patience, because being in a workplace such as Walmart you have to have patience to make sure that your work is done correctly and that you aren't just rushing past things. the Management was okay. Sometimes they could be a bit rude, but I would over look it. The hardest part was having to lift heavy boxes and be done before 2am.

Sometimes the boxes could be very heavy and they would hurt my back. The most enjoyable part of my job was the experience. I already am a major people person. So I loved being around all the customers and helping them, Plus I met a lot of new people working there so that's the best work cause I really take pride in my work and if I can make a customers day by helping them then that's pretty awesome.

I was a customer service supervisor and ran the front end of the store. Which included cashiers, customer service desk, money center, maintenance, door greeters and cart associates. What I learned was that people are very different and that I had to treat each person as an individual (including the customers).

I do not have a lot to say about the management. I became an at work, work friend with a few of them. For the most part, most of my co-workers were easy to get along with and were easy to supervise. I let them know my boundies from the very start. Even that there will be times to enjoy our work as well as taking our jobs serious.

The hardest part of my job was when, on several occasions that I was well qualified to move forward in the company they held me back from promotions. People say it was because I did my job too well. As far as my job being enjoyable, It really was. I had a very good relation ship with the associates as well as the customers.

One customer had said, "When I walk into the store and do not see you, they asked another associate if I was working that day. If I wasn't working they found out when I was then left and came in when I was working". WOW! That made me feel really appreciated.

The job it self is pretty easy and does not require much thought. Management is definitely an area Walmart needs to review and make stronger. Management shows favoritism to employees with seniority.

My coworkers who have 1 or more years under their belt do little to no work in my department and is left for the new employees to pick up the slack. Three of my coworkers in my department have great work ethics and i believe if management is not changed Walmart will be without some great working employees.

My day to day tasks are cleaning, preparing deli platters and party trays as well as cook the assorted foods on the hot bar, and last but not least serve customers, some great others not so much. I really dont have a hardest part of the job but preparing the food and interacting with customers makes my day.

I love my regular customers and i love the conversations i have with all the different people.

When I started at Walmart, I had a Store Manager who would be the first to jump on register, cover the can room breaks, go outside and push carts, help stock shelves, and meet with customers and employees for pretty much whatever was needed.

Management sent everyone birthday and Christmas cards in the mail and found ways to reward hard work through gift cards and free meals. And then corporate transferred our store manager to another store and the management team basically fell into shambles. People were being forced to stay overhours to cover other shifts because there was no replacements for people that had left and new management's response was "People can stay over and cover it."

In a 4 week period of time, we had 6 managers quit due to how things started to be run under the new store manager. My point being, Walmart CAN be a very pleasant place to work, IF you have good managers. For the better part of my time with them, I did, and I enjoyed working there.

Most of the hourly employees are very friendly people. Even after having left I still get hugs every time I go in the place. The pay was poor but if you work in retail and expect to be making a large sum of money you are going to be very disappointed.

My biggest complaint though is it took 6 months to get my pay increase for being promoted due to "training."

Frozen Deli Dairy (Current Employee)

I start my work day at ten o clock at night. Pick product out of the back room that can go on the shelves. Unload the dairy an frozen truck an stock the product. Averages about 15 to 20 hours a night of work that has to be done by seven in the morning.

So its 3 to 4 other workers an I who manages the fasts way to get the job done. Once product was finished being stocked I then bin it into the backroom bins which is Walmart's Inventory System. Keeps track of what we already have in store so the system knows to order what were missing. I've learned to articulate my thoughts to get my point across with multiple types of people an personalities.

Even some that clash with my own but has to be put aside to finish the job. The hardest part of the job is dealing with the way your treated within that company. The most enjoyable part is getting a hard works day done an exceeding what they expected of you.

It's an alright first job, but I would not consider Walmart to be a great long term job commitment for anyone. I can not speak for all Walmarts, but the one I work at could use some serious help. As far as sales go and the overall look/layout of the store, I would say that it is better than most, however it has it's own share of problems.

I feel as though management has a hard time getting on the same page. When problems arise between workers or just for one specific worker, it seems as though it takes a very long time for them to come up with a resolution, if they ever do. I don't agree with the training either. I feel like training has just been a lot of "throwing associates to the wolves" and just expecting them to learn everything on their own.

Depending on what they haven't learned in training, this sometimes leads to termination for meal violations, poor communication, etc. I also think that it is wrong how workers are treated. Hard workers seem like they get the work of those that choose not to work and, in return, never get rewarded. While workers who do not do enough work, or don't do the work that they are asked to do, end up being talked about, but never disciplined for what they are doing which over all makes work more drama-filled. I personally think there are far too many faults with Walmart to enjoy working there.

As I said though, I only know what I have witnessed at my own store. All Walmarts are not necessarily the same as the next just because of management, bad conduct, etc.

A typical day as an unloader consists of coming in to a short staffed crew and being expected to do the impossible without the proper help. A good unloader crew at the store I was at would consist of 5 people, one on the truck unloading and 4 others taking merchandise off the line and palletizing it by department.

On any given day, we were lucky to have 2-3 unloaders and were expected to unloaded a 3000-4000 piece truck in less than 2 hours. Management wouldn't allow us to take breaks at the same time, so instead of stopping the unloading process for 15 minutes they would slow it extremely for 45 minutes or more at times. You are unable to come up with ideas on how to make things more efficient because management will write you up, "coach you", for any out of the box thinking, mainly because it makes them look bad.

The work itself is fairly fun and great for keeping you in shape. But when it comes to any chance of advancement, there is none unless you suck at the job you were hired for, If you are good at the job they will refuse to advance you in the company because then they would be losing a person in a position that can actually do the job.

So my advice to anyone thinking about working for Walmart would be do the job but don't put your heart into it, and if all works the way it did in my store you will be management in no time.

For and overnight stocker, your night begins with a quick meeting where sales figures are discussed as well as the literal song and dance routine to attempt to incorporate you into the Walmart atmosphere. That's where the fun ends.

From the get go you are rushed to your assigned area where you must quickly take apart pallets while keeping your boxes neatly organized. Studies and algorithms have done the calculations and know just how fast that you should be moving, the only trouble is that there are too many variables at play. It would be one thing if help was brought when you were slow, but that's not what happens. You get written up instead. This can have a huge affect on your ability to be promoted, change shifts, or transfer stores.

Coworkers seem to be an equal mix of individuals who have egos, which are inexplicably inflated for where they have ended up in life, to the run of the mill doped up youth who are more concerned about the phone buzzing in their pocket than for anything else.

There is nothing enjoyable about this job. To change your life and work on nights for pennies more than minimum wage is an absolute joke.

Everyday you walked into this place there was dramatic things going on. In a typical workday you might work in 6 different departments never getting a chance to finish any work. The managers were constantly telling you the opposite of what others mangers would tell you.

The management was the worst here over any position I have ever held. There are times you might see a manager screaming in an associates face or just putting them down saying very inappropriate things. Most of your co-workers aren't too bad except that they will hire anyone. It's very difficult to work with people that can barely read or speak English.

Also associates are constantly walking out on shift because of the managers of customers. I would say the hardest part of the job is getting thrown from department to department every day and getting yelled at for not being able to get an unreasonable amount of things accomplished.

There wasn't anything enjoyable about this job. I found another position as soon as I could and left.

Most of the Managers were there to help you if you had any questions. Others were there to try and get the employees they didn't like fired.

Some of the employees went about their work like they usually did (some even taking on extra assignments that may or may not have been in their department)... others would start rumors that were meant to cause trouble or even possibly get another employee fired.

There were always chances to advance to a higher position within the company... so long as the manager offering the position was one in which you were in good standing with.

There was one manager I'd worked with, that would change your schedule without telling you, and then you'd get a phone call asking where you were because you're on the schedule now, when you weren't on it yesterday... thankfully they caught on to her and had her fired... sadly it was after she'd gotten me fired.

I have heard that they have a new general manager running things at the location in which I had worked at... and it seems that this manager is really cleaning house, and I for one applaud her.

Walmart was always a decent place to work, and I'm glad to hear that its becoming better than when I worked there.

Typical day at work was busy and even busier during the holiday season. I learned we were not fully staffed at the front end to get customers checked out within a reasonable amount of time. The company was hiring but cashiers didn't seem to stay around for long periods of time for various reasons. Some members of management were easy to work with and would even help out by getting on the register to get lines down.

Other members of management didn't bother to help out when needed. Overall working with co-workers was great; however, the company started to hire a lot of high school age people and didn't have enough cashiers after 9:00 pm during the week. The hardest part of the job was company not being fair to the associates. For example, younger associates got on their phones at the register instead of working, while others were eating on the job and nothing was done about these situations.

Also an issue of few allowed absences in a short period of time. For example, being a single mom and having to take care of sick children, I wasn't allowed to stay home. The most enjoyable part of the job was working with my co-workers and waiting on regular customers.

There is a lot of demand at this job and little praise. A typical night starts with clocking in and down stocking the merchandise. After that its involves working in ones aisle putting up the products in proper places until around four-thirty-five. After that is zoning for the rest of the shift. I find my coworkers to be fairly reasonable and easy to get along with. There are three breaks- two fifteen minutes and a hour lunch.

the most difficult part of the job is keeping up with what the managers want. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but we're extremely understaffed; thus more demands are placed on us to cover the areas that are lacking.

As for the managers- most of them seem to think that the best way to motivate us is by yelling and threatening to fire us. Things have improved slightly since one of the managers moved to days. Not a glowing report I know, but this is the simple and plain truth.

I have never hated working anywhere before I worked at Walmart. I had a pre-existing medical condition in which I had to take injections that made me sick. I asked for two off days together not caring which days it was, but they would never give it to me.

They changed my schedule every week. That would have been fine if I wasn't having to take injections. I can work and I can work hard, but the two days after my injection, I was very sick. Walmart did not care and would not take doctor's excuses or letters from the doctor. I ended up having to quit just so I wouldn't get fired.

Maybe it would have been better to get fired and then take it to court or something. Management at the Hueytown location was awful! They acted like all the other employees were low lifes. But they are just managers of Walmart... nothing special.
