Sales Associate (Current Employee)

3.11.2017, Job Location: Charleston, SC
I have to admit, Walmart has gotten me on my feet and kept me Ok. Over the years the company has had some drastic changes which weren't for the better. I've been with the company going on 5 years now, I had a set schedule in which my manager was ok with because he knew I was a strong hard worker, they changed the scheduling so that the morning crew would be FORCED in to working nights.

Shouldn't they have left the old morning people with their schedules and hired the new employees for mid or night shifts. Now I'm NOT scheduled at all, they completely took me off and everyone else who has closed available it's not fair! They should take care of their LOYAL HARD WORKING EMPLOYEES!

We have families to take care of and some of us are single parents! If they took care of us the way we take care of them that would make us go even hard for the company.

Customer Service Representative (Current Employee)

27.10.2017, Job Location: Ocala, FL
If I was working the opening shift, I would first collect the till for the register. My next responsibility would be to make sure my department(electronics) was clean and organized. I would then start to stock the shelves with the merchandise that was received the previous night.

Throughout all of this my number one priority is customer service. Mondays and Tuesdays I was responsible for setting the new DVD and video game displays. I also worked the backroom assigning overstock to its assigned locations.I learned how to track merchandise and its availability in our store and other Walmart stores in the area. Most important, I learned facts about our merchandise so that I could assist the customer intelligently. My department manager is excellent, but I felt upper management did not have a good grasp on everything that it took to run our department properly.

I enjoyed working with the associates in my department and e could always make a work day enjoyable. The hardest part of the job is that we were spread too thin, many times having to take care of other departments while leaving our department a mess.

Truck Driver Class A (Current Employee)

17.10.2017, Job Location: Apple Valley, CA
Company took away too many things from drivers no such thing as seniority company turning into a freight company too many live loads with substandard delay compensation before you were going no further than a 350 mile radius making very good money now you run into utah, Colorado and Wyoming it cool during summer months but who wants to drive in those states in winter month in ice snow on I 80 or Donna pass putting changes on company drop new hires pay to 38 cpm and theirs activity pay.

Drivers looking at other companies I am leaving in a couples days the fear of them getting rid of the private fleet. The company has this notion that they want to slip seat all drivers.A lot of the new drivers and some old drivers are very nasty and dirty who like sleeping in a truck after another person. The company claims the changes are happening because of Amazon kicking their butt. The drivers are having accident every other day now no unity anymore it sad but this new era of things is expected.

One more thing drivers think before coming on abroad 2 days home time no work life balance here and you will be slip seating no compensation at vendors until 45 minutes you give up for free than you compensate 14.00 hr that is slavery money the CEO don't give up free time when he is at work why should a driver.

Walmart is not the place anymore to drive for.

Front End Cashier (Current Employee)

1.10.2017, Job Location: Kingsport, TN
I liked working there. It had a very positive work environment with co-workers and customers alike. I learned that Walmart cashiers have a lot on their plates they carry out a whole lot of duties on their jobs.

Between getting all the things that people changed their minds about and putting them where they need to go to helping someone change a payment from debit to credit. Its a different experience for every one but mine was definitely a positive one.

The management was always willing to work with me when needed and other cashiers as well customers never left unsatisfied. They solved customer complaints and helped customers with finding things in the back room if needed. The hardest part of the job would be trying to keep bags on the bag carousel. All the cashiers know each other and act like a small front end community.

If a new cashier or even a cashier that's been there for a while needs some help some one is always there to lend a helping hand. The most enjoyable part about this job is just the customers themselves. They just have the best attitudes when they get to the register. Their positive attitudes made my positive attitude even better.

Smiles are contagious and it was and still is my pleasure to make someone smile at some point in his/her day.

Customer Service Manager (Current Employee)

29.9.2017, Job Location: Lancaster, CA
I proactively set up all the registers i need for incoming cashiers, directing traffic to even the flow of customers. Filling change orders for front end registers and throughout the store.Completing multiple register overrides and audits. listening to and addressing customer complaints and concerns.Supervising money center and service desk associates to ensure policies are followed. Supervising maintenance associates to be sure the customer has clean facilities and store to have a pleasant experience. Checking the parking lot and vestibules to be sure shopping carts are clean and ready for customers.

I have learned many forms of banking fraud and how to protect customers from becoming victims.I know how to speak to people to turn a potentially bad situation into a pleasant outcome. I've learned how to teach my cashiers to be the best at their jobs. I can effectively identify suspicious behavior of customers and associates.

The hardest part of my job is balancing the customer/associate ratio. Upper management changes the schedule schedule and reduces the number of associates i have available.

The best part of my job is the people. I really enjoy the people I work with, they are like family to me. making customers happy makes me happy, most know my name and prefer to have my assistance. because they know I care.

Connection Center Associate (Former Employee)

18.9.2017, Job Location: Simpsonville, SC
Typical day at work involved helping customers with purchases, and helping them buy phone plans that best suited their needs. If it was a prepaid phone I would set it up for them. If it was a contract phone I would enter the information into the computer and do their contract with one of the carriers Walmart was able to contract phones with such as ATT.

I learned that if you work hard and put the customer first customers will appreciate you and your expertise. I had customers who would only come to my Walmart to deal with me if they could help it. Management was a mixed bag sometimes you were dealing with great leaders who cared about their associates, and customers. They were lead from the front individuals who worked right beside you not afraid to get their hands dirty.. Then you also had people who only micromanaged everything from afar.

At times it seemed factions of management would form against each other causing morale and fragmentation among associates. Walmart used to feel like a family, and I was proud to be there. Hardest part of the job was getting hardly any shift coverage in a high traffic department. In Wireless which was inside Electronics we had a lot of customer traffic.

Management would try to run this area with as few associates as possible which caused a lot of stress on customers, and associates. The most enjoyable part of the job was getting to help customers with what they needed done.. Being able to fix whatever issue or problem they had then sending them home happy.

Customer Service Representative (Current Employee)

6.9.2017, Job Location: Wauseon, OH
Management is about as useful as a horn on a scooter. The CEO seems to me to be letting his father's company fail miserably just like so many previous supermarket type stores that have failed in the past. On top of that, during the 2008 recession, our managers were celebrating how all of these other stores were going out of business because they were selling American goods while Wal-Mart was buying products to sell from countries which regularly use child slavery to produce goods at factories.

On top of the immorality of Wal-Mart, they promise new associates they can transfer after 6 months to any store they want to for whatever reason they should want to transfer. Let's just say, I've been waiting almost 10 years to transfer to a store less than 15 miles from the one I have been working in.

Now, that's only 15 miles, what's the big deal, right? Well, lets just say that 15 miles takes a long time to walk when you have to pass a Wal-Mart to get to the one you work at. And the reason I at times need to walk in the first place is because due to the high quality management team we have at my store, I have on multiple occasions worked myself into a seizure. But hey, the store doesn't pay for my medical bills, I do. The store doesn't buy me a new pair of shoes, I do. The store doesn't pay me the other 8 hours I spend walking to and from the store to get to the house I live in. Nor does the store help me to afford to live somewhere closer to it so that the trip is not so long.

Grocery Manager (Former Employee)

22.8.2017, Job Location: Lutz, FL
A typical day at Wal-Mart starts off by trying to find equipment. This is a very important task because your job relies on it. You have to show up before your scheduled shift and track down people who may have equipment before it's given to another worker. After the equipment is maintained you must get on task as quickly as possible. Wal-Mart is extremely fast paced. You have to scan every out and ensure overstock is according to one best way. I worked in the deli and in grocery.

One thing I learned is Wal-Mart is very clicky. It's all about who you know and who they know. The best way to success is not to be the best or worst but in the middle.

For the most part I was very pleased with management for the first year and a half. However there were policies in place for people who were in my past situation that should have been covered. When I discovered this I tried to receive direction. However management had me take a different route. Very disappointing.

The workplace culture is very clicky. People form groups. It's best to stay out of it. Best policy Wal-Mart has is the ten foot rule. Just smile and be friendly. Just keep it moving.

The hardest part was how people would treat one another.

However the most enjoyable part was my actual work. I was almost bin-less and I loved how busy it was. I truly enjoyed helping the customers.

Inventory Management Specialist (Former Employee)

15.8.2017, Job Location: Sylacauga, AL
I liked working at Wal-mart for the most part. It wasn't too bad. I was offered a full time position after less than a month. HOWEVER, I was I wasn't given a raise when I signed my full time employee paper. I was given a raise about 3 months later, but it was a nationwide raise for all basic Walmart employees.

I was an inventory management specialist overnight. I binned in the overstock items and picked all items on the pick lists for each department to send to the floor for the stockers to put on the shelves. I enjoyed my job. I just didn't like how my schedule was. I would be on the schedule to work 8 or sometimes 9 days straight before an off day. I've only gotten one or two checks with overtime pay which was only one or 2 hours. Why? Wal-mart would scheduled me in the middle of a pay period, so that way my work days would cover 2 pay periods to prevent me from getting overtime pay. That way they could utilize my ability and work me over a week straight as needed.

I didn't like that at all as well as no sick time pay. I'd gotten really sick and was hospitalized for a few days before I could even make a year with them. I had all my hospital documentation and doctor's excuses, but they still took points every day that I was scheduled to work and did not show up, although I called in every time. By the time, I returned to work, I was nearly ""pointed out"" although I'd been in the hospital. I wouldn't recommend long term work for Walmart. Just very short term to help out.

Floor Associate (Former Employee)

7.8.2017, Job Location: Chattanooga, TN
Micromanagement by my 4+ managers

Being worked for 9++ days straight without a break

Unable to carry my phone despite the fact that I explained that I needed it for emergencies since a member of my family had a severe health condition and I needed to be notified immediately if the worst happened.

Low pay

Terrible scheduling such as working till 11 pm and having to come in at 7 am the next morning

A typical day at work included me coming in and finishing the work the night shift left behind, then being given more assignments by my various managers. Then I would likely be called up to work on the register most of the day or doorgreet then return to my department to find even more work waiting for me and get in trouble with my managers for not getting it done.

I learned at this job how to do inventory and price changes, how to stock and how to deal with horrible customers.

The hardest part of the job was the whole thing.

The most enjoyable part of the job was leaving for the day.

Sales Associate (Current Employee)

22.7.2017, Job Location: Rogers, AR
It really depends on the store you are located in. The store I am in is in Bentonville AR so we have higher standards in comparison to other stores. I constantly have to deal with working with a crew that is half the size it needs to be. New hires last roughly 2-4 months before quitting or transferring because they hate the rush and being alone. Management refuses to hire more because we are over our hour capacity for a neighborhood market even though we are #1 in the region constantly, but they are fine giving out hours to anyone who wants it.

Also, seniority doesn't exist in this company at all. The new system, customer first, is a heavy handed attempt at controlling hours. The computer generates the hours, but the managers can edit the hours seemingly without getting in trouble. This to me screams favoritism. If we don't open our hours, we won't get hours. This also meant you would be given terrible hours by the system. Either you work bad hours coming in and HOPE you get better hours (usually you don't), or constrict your hours and HOPE you get hours. New hires are shoved to night shift which is awful.

Project Manager (Current Employee)

14.7.2017, Job Location: Bentonville, AR
Fantastic culture, great message, true belief in work/life balance.

Poor middle management (most VP's and above are great...directors and below are all about maintaining the status quo).

Every job I've had here was highly political (I've had many). ""Perception is reality"" is bandied about relentlessly.

Project management is all about money and dates, not really much maturity in quality deliveries or usable products.

Scale works for you - when you do something cool it affects 2 million associates or millions upon millions of customers. You can be an engineer one year, an HR representative 3 years later, and an IT manager 3 years after that. Walmart offers unparalleled job diversity.

Scale also works against you, to get something done you need to know the right people and build the right relationships or walls of red tape will appear out of nowhere.

Overall, it's a great company to work for (speaking from a home office perspective). Management woes are not unusual, the ability to navigate a political environment is a must, and you can easily find glass ceilings if you go against the grain of your manager's style.

I could just be a difficult/hard to manage associate, but I've had approximately 10 bosses and only 3 of them I would recommend to others.

Toys Sales Associate (Former Employee)

6.7.2017, Job Location: Greeley, CO
The job had its ups and downs. A typical day included picking boxes from the back room, loading them onto a cart and then stocking the shelves. This is what i did for most of the day. In between this i would have to constantly help customers, even if that meant walking across the store to help them find a product.

Sometimes i would encounter rude customers but i had to always maintain a respectful tone. I would also be called up to help cashier multiple times a day. I would be doing that from anywhere to 15 minutes or even a few hours, depending on how busy it was. A lot of the time this caused me to not be able to finish my work i started that morning.

At the end of the day i would have to put all over stock away, dispose of my trash, and prepare for the next day. I would say it was a good first job. I learned how to deal with customers and my coworkers right away. It was an environment that I had to quickly adapt to.

Management provided little training. I had to figure a lot of things on my own, even after asking someone to help me. Each day was different.

Warehouse Manager (Current Employee)

26.6.2017, Job Location: Fishkill, NY
Working for Walmart on a day to day basis has been a honor and a wonderful experience to have under my belt. A typical day at work includes a large amount of walking, constantly helping customers through out the store and aiding other associates in the backroom.

Walmart has shown me how to lead a team in a retail environment and how to work with other members of management to provide proper customer service. All in all the management team that I have operated under and with has been a roller coaster of good and bad; I have operated under a total of 4 co-managers to the singular store manager.

The hardest part of my job on a day to day basis is constantly keeping up with the store and being ahead of the crowd to ensure that my orders are sent out in a certain amount of time for the online customers. I enjoy constantly being involved and thrown into a social environment and forcing myself to interact with customers and associates to ensure a successful day at work; it is always a great feeling when a customer is satisfied with their experience at my store.

Becoming a manager for the online shipping I have learned many many things that I would have never expected to pick up working at Walmart some of them include, working machinery, becoming much more familiar with microsoft offices, meeting coordination, inventory accuracy, greatly improving interactions with customers on a daily basis, phone service and sales.

Case Manager II Workers' Compensation (Former Employee)

19.6.2017, Job Location: Bartlesville, OK
In addition to this job not having a good work/life balance the company will lie to you about the job requirements. They make you sign a contract saying you will work at least 45 hours/week, but you are salaried so you do not get overtime.

Also, they will tell you not to stay late or come in on weekends because you will suffer burnout. However, if you are behind they will turn around and say, but you probably should stay late or come in extra days to get caught up. You NEVER GET CAUGHT UP. That is the problem with this job. Also I asked my team leader directly what my max caseload would be. She told me about 125 claims. I had a max caseload of 140 at one point in time. Management can also be wishy-washy. Some of them are great at their jobs and some of them are horrible.

For the positives. I will say that both the Workers' Comp and Liability trainers are EXCELLENT at their jobs. The problem with that though, is that when you go to do your actual job it's nothing like the training. Also, they do have special team days from time to time and food days where you get to take a small break from your work. Also, they do provide benefits, but the benefits aren't great.

Customer Service Manager (CSM) (Former Employee)

8.6.2017, Job Location: West Bend, WI
Walmart is a large company and benefits and suffers from its size constantly. Culture and management vary from store to store, and the socio-cultural reputation the company has created a stigma for the work environment and it spills over into your daily work.

Due to the size of the company, there are many locations that have positions a person can advance to. Stores can get possessive of employees that perform well, and may be hesitant to be overly cooperative in changes that would send that employee elsewhere.

I often had to work in numerous departments daily, performing tasks that I was never trained for and encountering customers that expected exponentially more than I was able to deliver with further training or management's approval. There is a disconnect in the managerial hierarchy and sometimes, due to scheduling, its hard to find someone to guide you or advocate for you.

Scheduling could be difficult and the flexibility of your schedule depended on who your manager was at the time (they rotate every 6 mos. to 1 year). Policy prohibited having less than 7 or 8 hours between shifts, but that doesn't account for travel time which created numerous shifts ending at 11pm, and next day shifts starting at 6 or 7am. Also, in-shift lunches and breaks could get hectic and missed if there wasn't adequate scheduling/coverage/call-ins and I often was locked-out of the point-of-sale system at the 6 hour mark without a break…

Department Manager (Current Employee)

28.5.2017, Job Location: Brownsburg, IN
A typical day at work includes coming in a figuring out if you have enough staff to run smoothly that day. Then it includes multiple managers to give you a list of things to do and each one says that their task is priority or more important.

When we have any upper management walking around you know that its going to be an extra stressful day because they expect perfection immediately. They don't tend to take into account your staffing or just how much you already have to do that day.

Your co-workers are nice though and if you have a problem you usually can get the help you need.

Of course theres the problem of your managers having a favorite, or liking another employee and they get better treatment than you do, but it's like that at most other jobs anyway.

The amount of work you put in sometimes makes a difference but generally speaking it often looks like you've done nothing, or you'll be made to feel like you did nothing by your managers.

The turn over rate is also really high, so you're constantly seeing new faces and wondering if they'll even last any longer than a week in Walmart in general.

Receiving Associate (Former Employee)

18.5.2017, Job Location: Lafayette, IN
At the beginning of the shift we down stacked the pallets by placing the product on carts for each specific aisle. Once everything was down stacked we moved to our assigned aisles and started stocking. The goal was to go as fast as you could in the allotted amount of time, while paying attention to out-of-dates and damaged product.

In conjunction with the main task we were to assist the customer with their questions and needs. Management was on a rotating basis so every 6 months or so we would see a new face, the third shift was a make it or break it deal. For the most part management had no clue, as to what the job entailed. As we were told so many times that the store would fail if it weren't for us.

Sometimes it felt like high school, people would develop their own cliques and if you weren't part of their group they wouldn't give you the time of day. The hardest part of the job was the constant up and down, the physical wear and tear on my body, working in extreme temperatures, no a/c during the hot summer months, no heat during the winter.

I learned how to work quickly and efficiently, how to use a Gemini to scan for outs and check shelf caps. I learned how to build a display. I learned that everyone is expendable. At the end of the day, the most enjoyable part was knowing that I did a great job.

Electronics Sales Associate (Former Employee)

Walmart's biggest issue is they do not value u their people. If you work hard you get to work even harder to pick up the slack of those around you, inconsistent expectations and standards from each manager and they vary from person to person.

It seems more times than not they promote the least qualified person to higher positions in store. Pay is low, if you do make anything over minmum wage they expect you to work yourself to the bone for that small amount. Doing anything above and beyond your job title will lead to you doing that item always. My time at Walmart I found myself doing the job of many department managers and even assistant managers when I was merely a sales associate.

I was naive enough to believe they were gonna promote me even tho I saw plenty of persons hired after me that were far less qualified in terms of experience or performance move up I continued to do such extra work until I left Walmart still only a sales associate after 5 yrs. My advice if you are a worker with strong work ethic stay away Walmart will exploit you to the fullest extent.

Bakery Sales Associate/Cake Decorator (Former Employee)

29.4.2017, Job Location: Calumet City, IL
Typical day at Walmart would start by hitting the floor and finding out what merchandise you need to stalk up on. After you take notes of what you will be pulling out from the freezer and what you will be making (I was a cake decorator). You pull everything you need from freezers and label them and there ready to be put out.

Then I would start working on what needed to be made i would get that done label it as well . When my floor was done I would start the rest of my tasks such as making my cake orders for the day and back ups for the floor. You are constantly washing dishes since icing can be very messy. I would constantly have to stop what I'm doing to take orders or help costumers the key is patience and being able to multitask.

What I learned: My artistic skills came out in this job as I learned how to decorate beautiful cakes this is something that I will probably benefit from for the rest of life. I also learned how to work with certain electronics I've never used before Walmart such as tel-zones.

Management: Management is good I would give them a 4 out of 5. They aren't always attentive because they have multiple duties and a very big department to run since fresh side is very big witch is understandable but can be worked on overall very good.

Culture: Walmart family and welcoming.

Hardest Part of the job : Being in very cold freezers and lifting very heavy boxes at times.

Enjoyable: Seeing happy faces when they receive a job well done.

A typical work day varied based on the schedule of the trucks. On a truck day it was very simple, we unloaded the trucks, and got the backroom organized so that the overnight crew could stock it. on non truck days we usually worked a lot around the store. either stocking merchandise, organizing the store, or just helping in areas that needed it.

I learned that when there is a lacking in management it is up to you to be the one to step up and get things organized and done.

Management was lousy, we had no direct manager for the majority of my time there, and they expected me to be the manager even when they refused to give me the position. if they had not taken advantage of me working as hard as i was then i probably would not have left.

It was a fantastic place to work because fo the people that i worked with. i became very good friends with a number of my co workers, and still am friends with a lot of them even though i am no longer working with them.

The hardest part of the job was the management and how they exploited the employees who actually worked hard. They never recognized the hard workers, and did nothing about the employees who didnt pull their weight…

The people that i got to work with was the best part of the job.

Management would continuously schedule me at 4 am while my availability was set to 6 am. I told them I could not work at that time, however they then changed my schedule for the following week so I would have split days off and everyday during the week was at 4 am.

I changed my availability in December 2016, now in March 2017 I am still being scheduled at this time. Having worked there for over a year, they still refused to give me full time status. Too much was expected of me; they expected me to get my whole department up and running, label and do a bin audit on three plus palettes of new freight, label and bin about two palettes of new frozen freight, process throwaways, and process markdowns within three hours.

There were days where I wouldn't even be capable of taking a break. All around, I hate this job.

A typical day of work was largely structured, with everyone knowing what to do through-out their shift. Management was quick to correct any emergencies or drawbacks, and associates as a whole worked together to build a strong, customer based sales force.

I learned a great deal about providing customer service, working as part of a team, and operations through-out the entirety of the store.

Management was hardworking and cared about their associates. Largely, management focused more on associate teamwork rather than working as a team with each other, and associates could become confused on more than one occasion with conflicting orders from the management team. Still, they made sure to hold to the open door policy, and any issues were heard and addressed with urgency.

The culture of the store was definitely one of family, tight knit and centered around teamwork. A few bad eggs never soured the bunch, and no one could ever go through the day without encouragement from their fellow associates. Hardworking and caring environment.

The hardest part working in this location was the low amount of associates, despite the ideas of teamwork. Associates often had to cover areas they barely knew, and there more often than not was only a single associate in any area at a given time, sometimes one in an entire section of the store.

I definitely enjoyed the community of the store, and the readily available assistance. If something went wrong you could always ask for help, and you were never left alone with a bad situation.

The programs you use on the computer to do your job are not user friendly or in any way intuitive at all. The processes you will have to go through in order to do anything other than give away money to smooth over a problem, which you are discouraged from doing, seem to be set up to be as convoluted as possible.

Rather than being encouraged first to do a good and thorough job helping the customers, you are instead primarily expected to do whatever you do quickly. The attitude is that if you happen to help the customer over the course of your call, then good for you. If not, so be it. This leads to customers that have to call back and wait the hour-plus to talk to you time and again who get angrier and angrier when each time they are told something different and nothing ever solves their problem.

You have a 9 hour shift with your legally-mandated minimum of a 30 minute lunch break, which given the location of the building, makes it impossible to leave in order to eat without extended lunch. They will extend the lunches to an hour depending on call volume, but then management acts like it's a huge treat to not be forced to work overtime, which is pretty insulting.

Employee retention is a huge issue - it seems like every hiring class of 15-20 new employees only has 3 or 4 that can make it past six months or so without quitting. Eventually, I, like so many others before me, ran away like my hair was on fire into the loving arms of anything else.

Wal-Mart Associate (Former Employee)

28.2.2017, Job Location: Charleston, IL
I know there are a lot of people who look down at Walmart employees. In most cases Walmart employees are very friendly. Walmart offers tons of programs to help their employees. My typical day would be to stock shelves for the first two hours of my shift while helping customers find anything they may need.

Then I would head to the back and help unload different items out of trucks and onto pallets (like electronics, camping equipment, non-frozen food items, ect) Then we pull the loaded pallets out to the floor and stock some of the items onto shelves till CAP 3 gets onto the floor. In all its a great place to work. Management I haven't had too many problems with except for the instructions they would give. One manager would say just make the shelves look nice up front (meaning pull 2 to 3 items forward facing the floor) while the other wants full pull (pull and organize all items facing floor).

This happened so often I could have one guy say you did it perfectly while the other is threatening my job. Otherwise the job was great and it has a very social environment. I would suggest if your not very good with communication skills then this is not the job for you.

Otherwise, if you love communicating and being part of a team then this would be the job for you.
